Section 32 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 provides for the position of the First Deputy Vice Chancellor in each Public University.
The First Deputy Vice Chancellor of Makerere University assists the Vice-Chancellor in the performance of his or her functions and in that regard, is responsible for the Academic affairs of the University.
The First Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) oversees programmes and policies that promote academic excellence in the University; ensures quality of academic programmes; oversees proper planning and coordination of undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes; coordinates curriculum development; and ensures optimal utilization of teaching, research and library facilities. The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) monitors the Colleges/Schools/Institutes/Centres, the Directorate of Research and Graduate Training, the Makerere University Library and the Department of the Academic Registrar.
The aforementioned structures position the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) to contribute significantly to the realisation of the University mission, “To provide world class innovative teaching, learning, research and services responsive to National and Global needs.”
